Stephanie Garber's YA novel, Caraval, instantly caught my eye because of the marvelous cover. The magical colors and wisps mirrored what the synopsis of the story was as an overall whole. The setting introduces two sisters, Scarlett and Donatella Dragna, who live on the Isle of Trisda with their father, Governor Dragna. Their mother departed from them when they were children, causing a strain in the relationship between Governor Dragna and his daughters. Due to this relationship between them and a strong will of hope for something to change, Scarlett wrote to Master Legend of Caraval. I'd like to describe Caraval as a sort of carnival-ish, magical world that holds a number of secrets and magic. The descriptions and details are all within the pages of the book and should be explored with great concentration--I put this book down multiple times in order to accomplish other tasks and found myself questioning what was going on when I returned. I don't mean to say this as a negative aspect of the novel, just a pointed one that a lot happens within the novel that matters to the story line and it should be read with acute awareness. While there is a familial bond explored with Scarlett and her sister Donatella, there is a romantic relationship explored between Scarlett and a fellow Caraval player, Julian. The love story that unfolds is complicated and riveting to follow throughout the novel. Overall, this novel focuses on the fantastical and hopefulness that magic and wonder can bring for someone's life; a change for the better lane to follow. I'd highly recommend this book, especially due to the ending and what I hypothesized would happen, but still couldn't believe did (no spoiling, but I had a hunch and it came true). I hope you'll give this a chance!
